Haiku Mill Wedding {Kelly + Matthew}

Today’s wedding is the crème de la crème of pretty weddings!

Kelly and Matthew chose to have a destination wedding in Maui, Hawaii, United States. The couple recalls, “We both had a long time love affair with Hawaii, she from her childhood vacations, he from his love of travel and surfing. There wasn’t much conversation between the two of us about the location, from the minute we started thinking we were going to tie the knot, we both knew we wanted it to be in Hawaii.”

Kelly and Matthew wed at the gorgeous Haiku Mill, which you need to see to believe. The venue is truly breathtaking and embodies unique old world elegance. Of the venue, they say “We both loved Maui for different reasons and took a trip to the island to scope out potential venues and meet with vendors. We had seen the Haiku Mill online and thought it looked magical but weren’t sold because we were picturing a beach wedding. After a long day driving around the island looking at different locations – we ended up at the Haiku Mill. We took two steps onto the site and knew, without question, that this was the place for us.”

The couple also included orange brilliantness all throughout their wedding, which makes us want to scream, “Aloha!”

“We aren’t religious people and wanted our ceremony to be something that was meaningful to both of us. We decided to do a non-denominational ceremony that incorporated elements of a traditional Hawaiian wedding to honor where we were – a portion of the vows were read in the native language and the bridal party walked down the aisle to a very romantic Hawaiian song (maunaleo). We also wanted to keep it short and sweet – the whole ceremony was done in less than 15 minutes.”

“We truly felt that it was our duty to take care of our guests – ensuring they had access to everything they wanted. We had orange pashmina’s on hand in case it was cold, custom umbrellas hidden in the wings in case of rain, buckets of orange/grey/white flip flops in all sizes sitting on the sides of the dance floor in case people’s feet started to hurt…we tried to think of everything!

We also tried to customize everything we could to make sure our wedding didn’t feel like a ‘rubber stamp’ wedding where the bride and groom could have been anyone. For instance, we are both huge NFL fans. When we introduced the wedding party – we had a professional voice-over talent pre-record our introduction as if we were our very own NFL team.

We wanted to make sure that people had an absolute blast so the focus was on entertainment. We had our guests submit their favorite songs in advance and made sure that there was something for everyone to dance to. There was also a huge candy table for people to snack from throughout the night.”

How did you meet?

“We met the old fashioned way; at a local bar. Initially, the bride wasn’t interested, going so far as to give the groom a fake name and promptly leaving. Matt is a clever guy and Kelly is a bad liar – and he was not fooled. As fate would have it, we only lived a few blocks away from each other and were lucky enough that our paths crossed again. Matt teased Kelly about her fake name and after a good laugh, she reluctantly met him at the same bar for a beer and game of shuffleboard. We’ve been inseparable ever since.”

Was planning a destination wedding easy?

“Planning a wedding on an island, with limited stores and vendors, proved to be quite the challenge. We knew what we wanted and weren’t willing to compromise. In the end, a lot of the items we were looking for weren’t available locally and we ended up shipping TONS of crates and boxes over. Fortunately, Kelly has family that lives in Maui and they were kind enough to open their garage to us as our personal storage space! We ended up taking numerous trips to Maui during the planning process to meet with vendors and plan.”

What was your favorite moment on the wedding day?

“We had the perfect day – there are so many favorite moments. But the one that will always be with us will be the first moment we saw each other down the aisle.”

What pre and post wedding activities did you do?

“We had a welcome reception at the Ritz Carlton two nights prior to the wedding ceremony for all of our guests. It was an informal cocktail hour with appetizers. We also hosted a BBQ by our hotel pool one afternoon for people to gather and spend some time in the sun. Our rehearsal dinner was very informal with just the wedding party and the parents of the bride.

We also put together a welcome bag that was delivered to guests’ rooms right after they checked in (which proved challenging because we had people at numerous hotels). The bags included all the things you need for a day at the beach (sunscreen, lip block, beach towel, water bottle, etc) and a few local treats (chocolate covered macadamia nuts, Maui Bubble Gum, etc).”

Do you have any special advice you’d like to share?

“Planning a wedding can feel entirely overwhelming at times and when it does it stops being fun. We had to constantly remind ourselves to take a deep breath and remember that we were really just planning a big party. We were supposed to be having fun.

I am so glad that we spent the time we did planning the little details to make this wedding ours. The small details were what stuck with the guests – from the W embroidered on the napkins at the dinner table to the custom labels on their water bottles – these little details did not go unnoticed.”

Crazy happy wedding wishes Kelly and Matthew and thank you for sharing your wedding photos and story with One Stylish Bride.
