“Michelle put a lot of work into it herself. She’s a true southern bell if you will, and a creative one. She made a lot of things herself, and re-used some important pieces that have been handed down in the family. Michelle chose to incorporate all the things her and Dan love most… including Florida State University – the college where they met. This wedding was a beautiful mixture of fun love, feminine class and sweet southern charm!”

Michelle recalls what items she re-used. “I wore my mum’s garter, wrapped my mum’s veil around my bouquet, used my great-grandmothers rosary (something blue) and also wrapped it around my Bouquet, our champagne glasses were used in every wedding on my mothers side dating back to her grandmother, and we used the cake cutters from Dan’s parents wedding.”

“The Bride was on a low budget and used her creativity, vintage taste and DIY details to stay within $10K. She married on her aunt’s beautifully landscaped property aiming for a whimsical backyard wedding vibe.”

We asked Katherine what was her favourite moment? “When I saw my groom and husband-to-be during our ‘first site’. It was such a special moment we shared.”

What was the colour combination for the wedding? “Ivory, navy and fuchsia.”

What made your wedding unique? “My wedding was in a backyard so that was a very unique factor. Our ceremony music was also unique – my bridesmaids and I walked down the aisle to Priscilla ahn’s ‘dream’.”

What was your biggest challenge? “Picking out a bridesmaid dress for my girls was a challenge. It was so hard to find a dress that fit my theme, style, personality and budget!”

Did you DIY and details? “My Dad cut a log for me to make the stumps for my centerpieces. I also went to an antique store to buy my vintage bottles for my centerpieces.”

What’s your advice? “Try not to get too overwhelmed by DIY details. [Also] love your photographer and their style – I wanted my photos to be vintage inspired to reflect the theme of our wedding.”

Emma and Aiden wed at Hinterland Baptist Church, followed by their reception at The Mudgeeraba Show Society Hall, Mudgeeraba, Gold Coast.

The bride wore a custom made wedding dress made by her best friend Erin. “I had an idea of my dream dress in my head and happened to find a picture in a bridal magazine. My best friend, Erin Davis, is a designer, so we tweaked it a bit and she made my dress for me. I have no idea how she did it from a picture, but she has been making dresses for me for years and it only seemed right that she make my wedding dress. I found the material in Cabramatta, Sydney and I knew it was perfect as soon as I saw it!” says Emma.

As if DIY flowers put together by the bride weren’t pretty enough on their own, they looked even more amazing when teamed up with a lovely pastel colour palette. “I didn’t want to stick to just a few colours but I didn’t want it to be colour overload either. So I solved the problem by having my bridesmaids in pastel colours and the reception fairly neutral with all different coloured flowers. I think everything ended up looking better than what I had thought!”

Emma explains what made the wedding unique for her, “I think the whole day was a perfect representation of Aiden and I. I wanted Aiden to share his ideas with me and have the day 50% me and 50% him. I think we did really well! It was such a group effort with all our family and friends ready to help. From my dress being made by my best friend, to Aiden’s sisters making the cake, girlfriends helping me make decorations and well… what did the boys do? Oh, organise the beer and the band!” {Emma giggles}

The reception was sprinkled with pretty handmade details. Emma remarks “I did get a lot of ideas from wedding blogs (such as yourselves!) and we ended up having a craftanoon as part of my Hens. We made the (very) messy string balls, little flags made from ribbon to hand out to guests at the ceremony, lolly bags stamped with A & E, and also the personalised tags that were hung around the vases on the tables at the reception… I made the stamps myself! I was so impressed how easy it was and how great they looked.”

What was your biggest challenge?

“The biggest challenge was keeping to our budget… it was very hard and we had to be crafty about what we spent our money on. At the end of the day we just had to decide what was a necessity and what wasn’t.”

What was your favourite moment?

“Wow… that is hard! The whole day was beyond incredible. But I would have to say, exiting the church! It was such a high, we couldn’t stop smiling and laughing. Absolute bliss.”

What’s your advice?

“My advice to other brides-to-be is stick to your ideas. Try not to get caught up in thinking you have to do the same thing as other couples have done before you. It’s your day, your way! I had many a strange look and questions when I shared my ideas, but I stuck to what I wanted and I could not have been happier.”

“I can’t remember ever photographing a wedding with a more playful attention to detail. Stewart and Natalie were married at her parents beach house near Chincoteague, Virginia, in the smidge of a town called Assateague. It consists of Front Street, Back Street, and Courthouse Street. So cute!

Natalie had grown up visiting this house and it was only fitting to have her happiest day surrounded by her happiest memories. Their vision from the start was to have as much fun as possible, and besides the near-melting heat, it was a smashing success. The eclectic, handmade details and bright colors made it feel like a vibrant afternoon at a carnival fading into a nostalgic summer evening.”

Our favourite thing about this wedding – no cutting corners! Everything was beyond gorgeous.

The wedding took place at Lake House, Daylesford, Victoria and is reminiscent of a “summer picnic set in 1950. Relaxed, colourful and fun” explained Rowie.

We love that this wedding was filled to the brim with unique and wonderful wedding ideas. Rowie recalls “I spent a lot of time sourcing all the display points and researching online. For example the paper flags hanging around the marquee were all sourced from Mexico, they are traditional wedding flags.”

Then friends and family helped with all the creative projects. Rowie explained “mum made my tablecloth and table runner for the day. The tablecloth was made from her bedroom curtains from when she was 5! The girls I work with made the patchwork quilt from vintage blankets, it was for the guests to lounge around in the sun and helped to create a relaxed atmosphere. The doilies were mostly vintage, my Nanna gave me quite a few of them. I hand dyed them all, and guests loved them so much they all took one home.”

Rowie wore a stunning custom-made wedding dress, “I found a photo on ebay of a beautiful 1950s white lace dress, but it had sold so I took the photo to Amici Couture and she was amazing! The dress was exactly what I wanted.”

Rowie remarks “We didn’t really plan to have a colour theme, but Danny and I both love vintage so I guess it all pulled together as a theme of vintage brights.”

“We made batches of cherry tomato relish every weekend in the lead up to the wedding. Danny was in charge of chopping onions and I did the rest. I used fabric and bakers twine to decorate them and Danny made all the individual name tags” says Rowie.

Rowie explains what made the wedding unique and special for her, “It was amazing having the wedding so intimate, we wanted to be able to spend time with everyone who was there and so we only invited close family and friends. Everyone at the wedding knew each other, which was nice. We wanted the day to feel relaxed, almost like a summer picnic. Taking advantage of the blue skies, lake and all the beautiful surroundings really made the day. However we did kick off into the night, after the wedding was over we all headed down to the local pub ‘The Farmers Arms’ to have a few beers. I did get a few weird looks in my wedding dress but it was fun.”

“Setting everything up on the morning of the wedding! A 7am start to have all the decorating done, which was tight because we got married at noon.”

“Danny and I wrote our own vows and they were a surprise for the wedding day. Poor Danny got so emotional he struggled to read his out. That was a pretty sweet moment.”

What’s your advice:

“Do as much as you can in advance! plan plan plan!”

Jessica and Brian wed in an emotional ceremony at Nappanee United Methodist Church followed by the reception at Matterhorn Conference Center. Jessica explains, “The entire first half of the ceremony. When my dad and I got down the aisle, both of us had been fighting back tears the entire way. My mom stood up beside me to give me away as well, and I was just overcome with emotion, when I realized I had forgotten my vows upstairs in the church. In the end, someone did get the vows to me, and saying our own vows to each other was so sweet and memorable and one of our favorite parts of the ceremony.”

Jessica recalls “I didn’t cry! I was nearly hyperventilating walking down the aisle trying to prevent the tears and keep a smile on my face, but for the most part I held it together. We were both surprised I wasn’t a sobbing mess throughout the day!”

The bridesmaids wore pretty blue and black bridesmaid dress. “The dresses are from Greta’s in South Bend and the designer is Alexia. I got the gloves from Amazon.com, they are just like Halloween costume gloves, the brand is Franco. Their shoes are from Deb” says Jessica.

“I made all of the programs myself. I loved the idea of them all looking different, with different black and white paper, and with an ‘E’ in Tiffany Blue. But I also wanted a photo of us, so I put that on the inside cover page. A friend of mine whose wedding I was in a few years back had written something personal about each of the attendants in her program and I loved it, so I wanted to include that in mine as well” says Jessica.

The bridesmaids wore unique handmade jewelry. Jessica explained, “I searched and searched for necklaces that I liked, and found pictures of lots of different ones that had parts that I liked.  I finally decided I would just try to make them, combining all of the different ideas I liked into 1 necklace.

Each of the girls has a different pendant, and all of the stuff used to make them were from Michael’s and/or Hobby Lobby. The bracelets and earrings were just kind of an after thought that I put together really quickly from some extra materials. I also made the necklace, bracelet and earrings for the flower girl. Let me just say that yes I really love how the jewelry came out, most notably the necklaces, but they were a lot of work! Each one took anywhere from 1 1/2 – 5 hours, and there’s a fine line between the value of your money and your time.”

Jessica recalls, “I had lace from my mom’s wedding dress wrapped around the stems of my bouquet, which was my ‘something old’. I had my ‘something blue’ in my shoes, ribbon around the bouquet, and the flower on my garter.  My ‘something borrowed’ was the little purse I carried, which was borrowed from a friend. And just about everything [else] was ‘something new’.”

Jessica wore earrings bought on eBay and a gorgeous wedding dress by Maggie Sottero. Her veil, headpiece, and bracelet were from Stephenson’s in Elkhart.

“On the head table, I made the ‘Mr. & Mrs.” sign and the ‘Edwards’ sign, which I was also inspired by photos I saw online. These were actually really easy, and I think they made a big impact and I now have them hanging up in my house” says Jessica.

“The big ‘E’ behind the head table was a paper mache letter I found at JoAnn’s and knew I had to do something with it. That ‘E’ took hours to get the color right and glue on all the crystals. We wrapped fabric around a piece of masonite for the backer, and then attach the ‘E’ to it.”

“I got ideas for all of the different centerpieces just from searching around for ideas online. I got the manzanita branches for the centerpieces and the Wish Tree as well as the crystal strands from Save on Crafts. For any centerpieces with grapevine, my mom and I took apart old grapevine wreathes and soaked them in water before putting them inside the vases so that they would be flexible.”

“I wanted to do something different than a guest book, and came across a photo of a wish tree and just knew that’s what I had to do”, says Jessica.

From the Bride:

More wonderful DIY details?

“I made each and every decoration at the ceremony and reception. The balls hanging from the pews are made of Styrofoam balls with crinkled coffee filters pinned to them, spray-painted in various colors, with crystals hanging from the bottom and at the top. These were also then hung over the dance floor.

My cousin did the Cord of Three Strands, or God’s Knot, in his wedding, and instead of paying $40 for a few colored ropes; I decided to make my own for my ceremony as well.

The place cards were made with the excess paper from the programs [and] my mother-in-law put them together. I created the RSVP and map cards sent with the invitations as well as the rehearsal invite.

I made the seating assignment board as well, once again combining multiple ideas and photos into exactly what I wanted. I also made the card box.

My mom made quite a few items as well: the flower girl’s dress, her flower cone (basket), and the ring bearer pillow. A lot of things from my wedding I found for sale or saw photos of online, but decided it would be much less expensive to just make them myself!”

Advice for brides?

“Start your planning as soon as you get engaged, and don’t take the time you have before your wedding for granted, especially if you’re a do-it-yourself bride. We had a long engagement so I kept thinking I had so much time to do and create everything I wanted to do for the wedding, but I stretched myself too thin towards the end and wished that I would have done more in advance.”

Breathtaking Joss and Ed were wed at Mougins, Côte d’Azur, France and managed to create a truly handmade wedding. Jose explained “We did everything ourselves! We designed the invitations, menus, table plans and napkins. We did the awning, decorations and seating for the ceremony, bought all the drinks from local wine shops, we bought all the vases from a local DIY warehouse and all the flowers for the table centres and bouquets from the flower market in Cannes. We found our own reading from the first book that Ed ever bought me and it was absolutely beautiful. The only things we didn’t do ourselves was the DJ-ing and food, although we arranged the menu ourselves. We did all this through lots of trial and error, lots of looking around shops to see what was available and also to try and keep the price down.”

Jose recalls “The flowers came from Cannes market and vases from a local hardware warehouse in Cannes. My mother and I put all the flowers together in the vases the day before the wedding and kept them cool and dark. One florist on Cannes Market made my bouquet and the bridesmaids made up their own.”

“We designed the menus and printed them on Conqueror cream paper and made the table plans by buying different postcards from Cannes market. We made each table a different ‘postcard’ by placing a different postcard on each table and relating it back to the one on the table plan” says Jose.

The pretty napkin labels were a joint effort, “My bridesmaids and I made all of the napkin labels. We wrote guests’ names in gold pen on handmade paper. We then threaded these labels onto raffia string and tied this around the napkins.”

The couple celebrated with an exquisite Macaroon wedding cake. Jose explained, “Our cake was the best surprise. This is the one thing I had not seen and it was amazing. It was a huge tower of Macaroons with sparklers coming out of it. When we cut the cake we were given a glass of champagne and the DJ put on Jay-Z and Alicia Keys Empire State of Mind and I felt like I was an actual celebrity.”

What was your biggest challenge?

“Sourcing everything ourselves and staying within the budget.

”

What’s your advice?

“Don’t get too worked up as it is just one day and it will go so quickly that it is better to enjoy the planning rather than get worked up on small things. You will have a wonderful time whatever happens and your guests are there to enjoy themselves, not to pick you up on tiny details. Weddings are wonderful and happy occasions in themselves and any wedding is going to be special because of this. My mother in law did so much of the planning as she lives in France. The wedding would not have been possible without all of her hard work. I think it is important to be able to let someone take control or help you if you need it.

”

Any additional surprises?

“
We were lucky as our guests mostly stayed in the local village. This meant that on the night before the wedding lots of people were out and about in the village meaning we had totally impromptu drinks with them, all which was lovely. The same happened on the Sunday after. We had lunch in the village with a group of some friends, then had drinks with a different group, then met another group on the beach later. It meant that the wedding became a weekend rather than a day. The spontaneity also meant that our guests were able to enjoy what Mougins and Cannes had to offer rather than the whole weekend being planned solely around us.”
