After organising and packing your garments, accessories, and wedding favors, focus on the décor next. Delegate a separate bag or suitcase especially for the decorating pieces, so the table runners don’t get mixed up with your gown and the pom-poms aren’t lying beside your veil. Also, choose only those materials that are lightweight and pack flat, so that you don’t use up extra bags for them. Remember, extra baggage = extra effort and extra charges!

Here’s some wedding inspiration on five fabulous and affordable ways to pack your destination wedding décor:

1. Fabric table runners – pick a material that doesn’t need ironing, unless you want to be ironing (or looking for someone who wants to iron) when you arrive at your destination! Linen and burlap are not good choices because they wrinkle easily. But if you’re bent on using that cute burlap runner you bought online, go ahead—except you must roll, not fold.

2. Flags and bunting – these are very popular in weddings today. They’re really adorable and take up very little space when packed. But they tend to wrinkle easily especially if packed with heavier items. To make sure that they don’t get creases from the other articles in your suitcase, place the carefully folded flags or bunting in a large re-sealable bag or manila envelope before packing them with the other décor pieces.

3. Fabric chair slipcovers – ask the hotel or resort for their chair measurements to make sure that your slipcovers will fit. Bring only those that only go over the back (or only on the seat), because you will need a lot more room in your luggage if you opt for the ones that cover the whole chair. But hey, if you want to cover the entire chair, that’s fine, too! Again, consider wrinkle-free fabrics so that all you need to do is unpack and dress up the chairs.

4. Cardboard cupcake tower – Get cake boards and cake dummies from your local bakery or supermarket and decide how many tiers you’re going to have. Place the materials inside re-sealable bags to keep clean. Here’s a post from Cake Journal on how to assemble the tower when you’re at the hotel; don’t worry because it’s super easy! Although to save time, you might want to cover the boards with wrapping paper before packing.

5. Paper decorations, such as garlands and pom-poms – Make the garlands ahead of time. These are a bit time-consuming, so don’t think you can assemble them at the venue. Flat designs, such as leaves, are best for packing. Place them in a re-sealable bag or envelope, too, and make sure there are no creases. For the pom-poms, stack tissue paper, fold accordion-style, and secure middle with twine or wire. You can throw them all together in a plastic bag and fluff them up into full-fledged pom-poms just before hanging.

Finally, remember to check customs for the country we’re your hosting your soiree, as certain countries don’t allow certain items in. After all, it’s better to be safe then sorry.

Duetto – It’s an Italian and Indian restaurant located in Wan Chai. Interesting food combination aside, the restaurant has breath taking views and a cute outdoor terrace. The terrace can accommodate 180 guests for cocktails and 50 guests for a sit down meal. The entire venue is capable of holding up to 500 people in total for cocktails, and 210 for food. The Bay – It’s located on Lamma Island and serves scrumptious Mediterranean cuisine at reasonable prices. The restaurant has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and is ideal for those looking for a laid back casual wedding by the sea. The venue can arrange speedboats, champagne and overnight stays on the island. Location: 7 Beach Front, Mo Tat Wan, Lamma Island, 2982-8186.

Le Meridien Cyberport – This is a great venue for intimate ceremonies, specifically if you want an outdoor element to your wedding. For an outdoor ceremony, we recommend the immaculately maintained Cyberport grassy area that can be hired for private events. The poolside is also a perfect area for small parties of around 40 guests, with the option to have a barbecue party for a casual affair.

For a larger wedding, Prompt Restaurant can accommodate up to 100 guests for a Western style sit down dinner. If you prefer a Chinese banquet, this option is also available. Location: 100 Cyberport Rd., Pok Fu Lam, 2980 7788.

The Rocks at Middle Bay – If you prefer your seaside experience, consider a Shamrock-catered party at Hong Kong’s coolest beach venue. Although only a stone’s throw from Repulse Bay, the venue is tucked away and secluded, offering an ideal location for a wedding.

The Pawn – It’s located in Wan Chai and is set in a historical building that was once a pawnshop. The Pawn has been restored and is now one of the trendiest drinking and dining destinations in Wan Chai. The bar and restaurant has three areas, the Living Room {80 sitting, 150 standing}, the Dining Room {seats 80} and the Roof Garden {80 seated, 150 standing}. The Royal Pacific Hotel and Towers – It’s located in Tsim Sha Tsui and offers a wonderful alfresco setting with gorgeous harbour views. The hotel offers a 2-tier pier side function area, which seats 78 on the upper level and 38 below. This venue gives substantial freebies to those booking for 50 guests or more. Hebe 101 – This venue is decked out in charming Mediterranean decor and has lovely water views. It serves international cuisine at reasonable prices, with a focus on fresh seafood. The restaurant spans over 3 levels and has a large rooftop that overlooks Hebe Haven. Hebe 101 can accommodate up to 100 guests. Location: 112 Pak Sha Wan, Sai Kung, 2335-5515.

The Fringe Club – It’s located in Central and has a roof garden, which is perfect for a cocktail reception. Tapas are available for those that want to serve canapes, and the unlimited drink packages are affordable. The drinks package includes spirits, wines and beer. Members can hire the roof garden free of charge, subject to a minimum spend. The minimum spend is $6,000 HKD on weekdays and $20,000 HKD on weeknights. One-Thirty One – It’s located in Sai Kung and is ideal for an intimate affair. The restaurant is a converted village house and has spacious green lawns that can be used for the ceremony. Oohlala – This venue can organize the perfect Hong Kong beach wedding. The wedding party and guests can arrive via junks and the ceremony can be performed under canopies. Cocktails, dinner and entertainment are included in their wedding package. Location: Pui O Beach, Lantau, 2984-8711.

Top Deck – It’s located on top of the Jumbo Floating Restaurant. The 9,000 square foot alfresco dining deck seats 280 for dinner and up to 700 for cocktails. The Crescent wedding package for 50 guests includes hire of the west deck, champagne for toasting, floral decorations and centerpieces, canapes, free flow wine and a choice of either buffet or sit-down dinner. If we had to pick a favorite, we’d choose The Rocks at Middle Bay, simply because we love a trendy and intimate setting.
